Best places to live in Bangkok: an area guide by train line
In Bangkok the train line decides the neighbourhood. Thonglor and Ekkamai on the Sukhumvit line suit buyers who want restaurants, bars and a Japanese expatriate community, Sathon and Silom suit those who want to be in the business district, Ari is a cafe district on the northern stretch, and Rama 9 sits on the Blue Line of the MRT.123
Keybaan lists new developments across Thailand, including Bangkok, and the listings below sit on the corridors this guide covers. Most of the area detail comes from Wikipedia and a government information site, so treat it as general background.
How the BTS and MRT shape where people live
The BTS Skytrain has two lines. The Sukhumvit line runs from Kheha to Khu Khot, and the Silom line runs from Bang Wa to National Stadium. They meet at Siam, and the guide counts 47 stations on the Sukhumvit line and 14 on the Silom line. These details come from the government information site, in a guide updated in July 2023, so newer stations may exist.1
Interchanges with the MRT and the Airport Rail Link are at Mo Chit (MRT Chatuchak), Ha Yaek Lat Phrao (MRT Phahon Yothin), Asoke (MRT Sukhumvit), Sala Daeng (MRT Silom), Bang Wa (MRT Bang Wa) and Phaya Thai (Airport Rail Link).1 This guide gives no fares, because the figures date from 2023.
Sukhumvit: Asok to Phrom Phong
Asok (E4) is the interchange with the MRT Sukhumvit station, and Phrom Phong (E5) is the next station on the line towards Thong Lo.14 Station codes come from Wikipedia pages and a search summary, so check them on the operator's map. We found no further area description for Sukhumvit proper, so the area is described here only by its stations.
Thonglor and Ekkamai
Thonglor (Thong Lo) is at Sukhumvit Soi 55 in Watthana district. It is known for trendy bars and restaurants and for a Japanese expatriate community, and its station is E6.24
Ekkamai (E7) is at Sukhumvit Soi 63, next to the Ekkamai Bus Terminal, with APAC Tower beside the station.5
Sathon and Silom
Sathon Road is a financial district with many condominiums of 40 storeys or more, and it has several embassies. Taksin Bridge and the Chao Phraya Express Boat CEN Sathon pier are at its south west end.3
Si Lom Road is a main business district in Bang Rak.6 Chong Nonsi station (S3) lies between Sathon and Si Lom roads and has an interchange to the Sathorn bus rapid transit line.7 Sala Daeng (S2) connects to MRT Silom.1
Ari and Phahonyothin
Ari (N5) is on Phahonyothin Road at Soi Ari in Phaya Thai district, with cafes and government offices.89 Mo Chit (N8) is further north and links to MRT Chatuchak.1
Rama 9 and Ratchadaphisek
Phra Ram 9 station on the MRT Blue Line serves Fortune Town and G-Land, at the junction of Din Daeng, Asok Din Daeng, Ratchadaphisek and Rama IX roads. BEM operates the Blue Line.1011 Thailand Cultural Centre is station BL19 on the same line.12
Riverside
Saphan Taksin (S6) on the Silom line has an interchange with the Chao Phraya river ferry.13 The Gold Line opened on 16 December 2020 with three stations, and it feeds from the Silom line to ICONSIAM, which opened on 9 November 2018 and is served by Charoen Nakhon station.1415
Choosing between the corridors
- Restaurants, bars and an expatriate community: Thonglor and Ekkamai on the Sukhumvit line.25
- Offices and tall condominium buildings: Sathon and Silom, with the river pier at the south west end of Sathon Road.36
- Cafes and a northern stretch of the BTS: Ari and Mo Chit.91
- A newer MRT address: Rama 9 on the Blue Line, beside Fortune Town and G-Land.10
- River travel and ICONSIAM: Saphan Taksin and the Gold Line.1314
A condominium near an interchange station reaches a second network without a change of plan: Mo Chit, Ha Yaek Lat Phrao, Asoke, Sala Daeng and Bang Wa link to the MRT, and Phaya Thai links to the Airport Rail Link.1
Whichever corridor you prefer, ask for the walking time from the building to the nearest station, because that figure was not part of the sources for this guide.
Hospitals near these areas
Bumrungrad International Hospital is at 33 Sukhumvit 3 in Wattana.16 We have not confirmed addresses for other hospitals, so ask the hospital for its current location before you rely on one.
Prices by area
Each Bangkok listing shows the price from the developer where one is given. Where only agent or portal figures exist, the card reads Guide price with the date we checked it, and where sources conflict or give no figure it reads Price on request. We never pick a figure from conflicting sources.
This guide also has no confirmed information on flooding, traffic, air quality or schools in Bangkok. Visit at the time of day you would commute.
